Waterloo (AKA Loo) joined the farm (and our family) in 2016. His "critically endangered" breed is slowly making a come-back. His wool rivals the softness of the merino. All of the sheep in our spinner's flock were bought from Michigan farmers. Loo comes from the Time Together Farm in Fennville, MI. Because of his "badger face", to me he looks like a giant teddy or panda bear! He's very wary of people though and only indulges my urge to snuggle, when he's confined to his stall.
Waterloo is only sheared once per year. His wool is ultra fine and crimpy, about 4-5" in length. His wool can be spun into bouncy bulky weight yarn or it can be spun into a fine yarn that has some natural elasticity from the fine crimp. Regardless of the yarn weight, Loo's yarn feels "earthy" and "textural" to me. His wool is ideal for hat making! The elasticity of the fibers work to keep the hat snug on your head.
