Deering joined the farm (and our family) in 2015. All of the sheep in our spinner's flock were bought from Michigan farmers. Deering comes from the Mitten State Sheep & Wool farm in Coldwater, MI. He's our "gentle giant", the gentlest sheep in our flock. His calm and steady demeanor make him a favorite of farm visitors. He's also our most prolific wool producer, often giving us more than 15lbs of wool each year!
Each year Deering grows lots of soft, fine grey wool. As he's aged, the color of his grey wool has subtly changed. His lamb fleece was dark brown, but through the years it's lightened and mellowed into a lighter slate grey. We shear Deering yearly and his locks are often 6-7" in length when sheared. His wool is quite fine and yarn spun from his wool is next-to-the-skin soft. When spun into yarn, using a woolen spun technique, his wool has beautiful loft and bounce. His wool takes dye well and because of the grey undertones of the wool, it dyes rich subdued colors. When handspinning yarn, Deering's wool is always a favorite of mine to work with. The fine, "grippy" fibers, make it a delight to longspin.
